Band Name Fonts

Quilted Butterfly

We like this font as it has connotations of Alice in Wonderland – it’s feminine, yet appears slightly scratchy and implies a certain edginess. It’s whimsical, and yet the splattered ink effect makes it seem passionate.

Jellyka Castle's Queen

The second font is quite feminine but has a 'halloween' edginess to the font which will show the personality of the artist of being feminine, but also quite mysteriously edgy.

Jellyka Western Princess

This font was chosen because it uses the feminine look with the flick on the font shows the edginess of the artist, however the italic font conveys the feminine personality.

Discipuli Britannica

This font isn't as good as it is quite small and doesn't show the representation of our artist as much because it is a bit to feminine rather then being edgy and mysterious.

We have chosen the name of the artist to be Madelyn Faith, this is because the artist influence that we have looked at such as Tori Amos, Kate Bush and Florence and the machine all use their own name as the artist rather then a band name made up. Madelyn is also an old fashioned name and goes together with the Faith surname.

Influence Album covers

After looking at all these album covers of artist influences, Siani and I have noticed many different similarities to each other that would be good to use in our own Digi-Pak such as flow dresses, dark and earthy colours; for example in Tori Amos album 'Scarlets Walk' where she is standing at the end of an open road which looks dusty and deserted . Also there are many that has the artist but the artist is never centered, they are on their side, facing away and on her side.
All these album covers have a key theme of looking quite old and vintage ; the artists also look quite distraught and destressed both the audience have actually heard the artist songs. There is also a contrast with nature which is seen as 'beautiful' and 'peaceful'; for example in Kate Bush album 'The sensual World' includes her holding a rose, in contrast with the dark colours and disturbing images; for example the Kate Bush album 'Never For Ever' which includes pictures of ducks and bats.

Digi-Pak draft

After discussing both me and Siani's designs we decided on the different parts of each design that we have wanted to use and thought would look good together.
- Pale colours and patterns throughout
-'Vintage' look on the cover
-Polaroid photo look of two pictures of the artist.
-Hand written lyrics on a pale background and bright writing.
-A mid shot/ close up of the artist wearing a mask.

Digi-pack Cd covers

What is a digi-pack?
A digi-pack is a CD package which represents/ promotes the CD and the artist. It's a fold out booklet made of cardboard, with the CD generally placed in the middle of the digi-pack.

What makes an effective digi-pack?
- The same design/ colour scheme throughout.
- Folds out into a picture.
- Strong and contrasting colours to catch the attention of the audience
- Images that represent the artist (such as graffiti or cartoon)
- Pictures of the band/artist.
- The use of cover art.

Cd cover influences

By looking at different cd covers and ideas that Siani and I have looked at similar artists and have decided to use some of the ideas from similar cd covers which has influenced and helped us gain new ideas to create our own cd covers. Alot of these album covers are seen as simple but with the random one bright colour of the picture it looks good and attracts the audience attention. Siani liked the look of the Lady Hawk album which involved the sketch look for an album cover, as well as the new Ellie Goulding album 'Lights' because she found the lights from the album made the album look interesting.
My favourite album within this collage is the Mika album cover; this is becuase it is bright and colourful, however it looks like a 'dream' or collage of different random animated images

Comparing blogs

After looking at the 'longroadmusicvideo' blogs, I have made a few comparisons from their blogs to mine.

What Went Well (Similar to mine) :
  • Throughout their blogs they used a lot of description on the analyses of their genre using evidence to back it up.
  • They have also placed a lot of different music videos which have been embedded from YouTube.

Even Better If (Improvements of mine) :
  • They also included the location information that they used, which I could use to improve my blog and describing the actual location I am using.
  • They have also taken screen shots of different website and advertising such as Myspace for the artist to show the artist image. This could help to improve my blog to get more screen shots.
However an improvement of their blogs was that throughout many of their blogs I found that they have too much text without any visual work, whereas my blog has at least one visual image in each blog post.

Shooting Schedule

For ever scene we film it would be better for us if we filmed each location with Siani lip syncing the how song in which we can use the different shots if we need to include more cuts within the video.

Fonts

Whilst looking at fonts Me and Siani have found this font have decided this font would most probably be used on our Cd Digi-pack and the advertising fonts.

However after having another look at the artist representation and different font, we have discussed that this wasn't really what we was looking for and decided we wanted more feminine but with an edge which is used in calligraphy writing.

Image Annotation

Siani has been chosen to be the artist because by looking at the artist of our song 'Blinding' by Florence in the Machine, and comparing her to Kate Bush and Tori Amos they all have a similar look such as the red hair.
However, for our artist I think we will change the artist to not being dull coloured but being quite plain with a bright accessories such as bright coloured eye lashes or mask.

Talent Release Form

A talent release form is used for a producer to get permission from their performers and if whilst filming someone is filmed within the shot and you decide to use the footage then you would need to get permission from the public to say that they give us permission to use the footage with them in it.

Concept

The concept of our music video is influenced by the fact that both Siani and I are both really camera shy, so we took this at our advantage and decided to use the concept of the music video through using masks and low key lighting to show the artist in shadows.

This can be shown in the music video for Look Blue Go purple - Circumspect Penelope, in which this girl band are performing in masks.
This video uses a lot of different shots this is mainly made up of close ups and mid shots of the artists with their masks, however the use of lighting in the video helps to show produce a shadow behind the artist.

Roles

Within our group there is only Siani and I, for our music video Siani as the artist, as she has the most alike image to the artists influenced such as Florence, Kate Bush and Tori Amos. We will both be sharing the roles equally with Siani being the artist and I will help with costume and filming.

Song Details

The song Siani and I have decided to use is 'Blinding' by Florence in the Machine. We decided to use this because it mentions the character of snow white and the image of tortured, distorted pale women and the song style is like being in a twisted dream state.

Record Label Permission Letter

The record label for Florence in the Machine song 'Blinding' from the album 'Lungs' is Island Records. If we want to use this song we need to try to get permission from the record labels.

When researching the record label I found that the record label were not as easy to contact as they didn't have a email address so we could email them the letter, this means we will have to send the letter through mail.

Location

After looking at the Ophelia pictures Siani and I decided that we wanted to locate out music video in a forest or park, this would be in the autumn winter season when the colours would be brown and yellow gold effect.

We decided that Nonsuch Park would be a good
location to set the music video. I looked at some of the pictures Miss Cunliffe had taken and found some really good locations within these pictures.

This could be a good image to use as a long shot for seeing the artist or just as a cut edit to show location.

The lighting within this shot would be good in a shot because it would be natural light and use the natural effect.

This image location would also be good to use as
it is quite mysterious and dreamy effect which would also connect back to the Nina Ricci perfume advert as quite a fairy-tale effect.

Artist Image

In this lesson I looked at the artist image for Siani, we decided that we would use the inspiration of Lady Gaga and use an accessory to disguise the artist. This is mainly because Siani is quite shy and we worked with this to make the artist look modern, this would be an idea we would use throughout the promotional packaging as a symbol for the artist.

PhotoShop

By looking at the promo images as well as the photoshopped image I have produced, the photoshopped picture I think wasn't so good because it does not really look like an album cover for a Indie artist.
However the image used is a mid shot of Siani is used in a sketched effect which could give the impression of the artist being quite ambiguous in the way she is presented in the album cover, being a theme throughout the different promotional products, which could be a good use of photoshop.

Green Screen Example

After being shown how to use the green screen, Siani and I put the images into Final Cut to practice and learn how to use this program. We were able to import a background over the back of the practice shots and be able to overlay both camera footage.
We found it hard to make sure both the camera footage were in time with each other so they run smoothly. After trying this a few time we both worked out how to place them both in time with each other.

Music Video Ideas

After Siani and I discussed the song and ideas for the music video, we discussed the different types of ways to create a music video using the influences of Tori Amos , Kate Bush and Florence for the song 'Blinding' by Florence and the Machine. In the lyrics of the song it talks about 'Snow White' this helped with us finding the advert for Nina Ricci's perfume advert, where it is quite a slow and fairytale like theme

Music Video - Influences

By looking at both music videos I can see that both artists use low key lighting and both artist are wearing flowing dresses and an outside location, but the location is also quite ambiguous, it is also quite nature and flowing in a slow but the artist creates a distressed atmosphere through the fast movement. These are also quite similar to the Florence in the machine music videos such as Kiss With A Fist.

Florence Influences.

By starting to anaylse Florence, I have found many similarities between her and Kate Bush as well as Tori Amos. There are many similarities between their apprearance, lyrics and Music videos.

Appearance

The links between Kate bush and Florence is the fact they both have red outstanding long hair and wear long flowing dresses, this also gives the effect of being natural and calm. They also have the same sort of theme of nature and using pastal pale colours within their appearance. The same appearance is similar to Tori Amos who by looking at her can tell that shebased her looks and music image on Kate Bush, which could mean that through the influences of both Kate Bush and Tori Amos Florence had used a mixture of both artists to create her image.
This image gives the impression of a torched, distressed andn uneasy women.

Orginal Photos

The use of an over the shoulder shot is used to cover the identity of the artist, which could be an effect used throughout the artists promotional packages. This is an idea that Siani and I are thinking of doing for our artist to gain the audience attention.

To compose this image the keyboard was placed on the table and I pretended to play the instrument. Siani stood on a chair to give the effect of a high angle over the shoulder shot. This gives the effect that the artist plays intrustments as well as sings.

Innotive and Contempary Music Videos - (Task 2-7)

Chromeo- Don't turn the lights on

Innovative through the use of interesting cuts, where the video cuts when the lihts turn off and on which is very effective because it plays with the name of the song. this is the use of Non Linear editing. There is also low key lihtin hich contrasts with everything black apart from the eyes and the lips/mouth lip syncing.

Charlotte Gainsbaig & Becks - Heaven can wait

Innovative through the use of lights in the bears eyes. Throughout the music video we see something normal but it ends up with something out of place ( this happens more then once throughout the video). For example the monster mask and the bath full of cereal.

Timothy Saccenti - Painsion Pit - Little Secrets

The women stands smiling in between people standing with paper bages decorated with sad faces. As the instruments are played the confetti is thrown in the air. Bright lights are used. It is contempary because it follows the conventions of a music video.

Jamie Lidell -Another Day

Walks along white lite up blocks with people wearing black outfits and many people around him wearing white masks. As he puts the glasses on only the eyes and mouth are moving.

Nava Dando - Mia - Jimmy

She stands there while moving her arms there are more then two arms moving behind her but the audience do not see other people. Many cubes around her showing the same images of her singing.

Guardian Website

My favourite music video from this website was Cee Lo Green-F*ck You. It is my favourite because it uses a typical American diner with bright colours which stand out throughout the video. The video is good becuase it appeals to all audeince by all different age boy through a boy life stages lip syncing to the song. It is also good becuase it uses animation as well as real life which makes the music video interesting.

Carol Vernallis Theory

The grammar of a pop video
Carol Vernallis believes that music videos do not have a certain narrative to their videos. Music videos are more choppy and fast cut, they tend to have parts that do not always flow. For example this could be in a video if they just show the arm, then the head, then the legs. The pop music video editing aims to stop the audience from focusing on the image rather than the music itself, or music over image.

An example of this would be the Lady Gaga music video for Bad Romance

In this video they cut from Lady Gaga in two different shots, however her hairstyle changes from one shot to another. This wouldn't normally flow as a story, however the audience can tell that their both Lady Gaga. This shows the present moment within the music video even though whats happening in the music video is changing.

(Task 1) Brief

To produce a promotional package for the release of an album to include a music promo video together with two of the following three options:

- Website homepage for the band/ poster
- Cover of the album
- Magazine advert for the album

Creating your own artist but could use a orginal song but recreate the artist for the music video.

Thursday 8 July 2010

(Task 11) Andrew Goodwin theory.

Goodwin helps to identify the different juxtapositions happening within a pop video explaining the relationship between the music lyrics and Image.

Disjuncture probably wont be used in out music videos because we are creating a new artist who are not well established, so the audience may not understand the genre of the artist because of their expected conventions of the genre.

(Task 8) Conventions of a music video

  • Lip syncing, this is used to show and let the audience recognize it as a music video.
  • Close ups are used to show the singer.
  • Long shots are used to show dancers or them performing with instruments.
  • Mid Shots
  • Cuts to the beat, this dictates the speed of the music video, lots of cuts very rapid.
  • Props, these are according to the song and the genre.
  • Cutaways, use of montage editing to show variety.
  • Muted footage with soundtrack.
  • Camera on main artist, this shows eye contact and a 'moment of pleasure'.
  • Narrative may be told, but the concept is more important.
  • Performing actions to the beat.
  • Performing with instruments, singing, dancing.
  • Constant match on action, continuity through singing.
  • Camera always on the move, this shows energy and dynamic within the video.
  • 3-4 minutes Long.
The overlaying of images, performance and editing all refer to the lyrics through story, concept, performance and location and refers to the genre of the music video.
